School Food Update – Notes from the Kitchen

Catering Service Improvements

We have been successful in applying for some grant funding from Norfolk County Council to progress the next set of improvements to our catering service and a meeting will shortly be taking place with some students to agree the next set of changes to the overall service.

Nutritional Standards

Our menus have all been evaluated to ensure that we are meeting the current nutritional standards for students in secondary schools.

The good news is that we are doing so and we will continue to make sure that food served in school meets the standards.

Price Increases from 5th. January 2010

Negotiations with suppliers over the prices we pay continue on a regular basis but we cannot put off price increases any longer so with effect from 5th. January 2010 we have applied some minor price increases to school meals.

As an example the cost of a full roast lunch goes up from £1·80 to £1·90. The full tariff is on display in school.

Uptake of School Meals

Uptake of school meals continues to increase and the response from students to menu developments has been terrific.

Finding Out More

If you have any queries or concerns about the catering service in school then please contact Mrs. Davey (Catering Manager) on 01603 810924, extension 241.

School Food is Changing!

The Government introduced food-based standards for school following research carried out amongst children in 2005. The standards define types of food which are no longer allowed or are restricted, in order to replace food that is high in fat, sugar and salt, with more nutritious food and drinks.

You can read more about food-based standards on the School Food Trust web site.

Feedback demonstrates that the changes in food provided do help to bring about better behaviour and performance in classrooms.

Where possible we source our produce from local suppliers, helping the local economy and ensuring the freshest seasonal produce.

Some of our packaging is bio-degradable and we are striving to get to the point where all packaging meets this standard.

Students can pre-order take-away packs (break or lunch) if required and we can also cater for most dietary limitations – just talk with us.

Available every day there are:

  • A selection of fresh sandwiches
  • Assorted, wholesome, home–made biscuits and cakes
  • Hot, low–fat drinking chocolate
  • Warming tomato soup

Salads are available (but must be ordered by 10.00 a.m. on the day)

Prices are very competitive – our food service does not set out to make a profit, simply to cover its costs.

We deliver a wide range of healthy meals and snacks for students at the school from two serving facilities:

Main Canteen – the hub

Open at break (10.00 – 10.20) and lunch (12.20 – 13.00)

Serves delicious, healthy, hot meals on a menu that changes daily, including a vegetarian option.

There are a variety of choices and you can look at the current menus.

The canteen meals are being evaluated for nutritional content and we will publish this information, when available, with our menus.

Also available for take-away or eat-in are a choice of sandwiches freshly made every day, rolls and drinks, cookies and muffins and low fat, low sugar popcorn.

Biscuits and Cakes are available at lunch time only.

Snack Shack

Open at break and lunch (times as above)

Serves sandwiches, rolls, drinks and hot soups (dependent on season).

Biscuits and Cakes are available at lunch time only.

Take away only.
