Behaviour Support Centre

Updated 19th. October 2009

About the Behaviour Support Centre

The main aim of the Centre is to support students in years 7 to 11 with Emotional, Behavioural and Social Difficulties.

We support them to overcome barriers to learning and to help the students reach their full potential and enjoy a happy and successful time at school.

The Behaviour Support Centre was created in September 2008 and is made up of two elements – Base 31 and the IEC (Internal Exclusion Centre).

Building Relationships

An essential part of our role is to build and maintain positive relationships with students and their parents/carers.

In addition to this, we create and maintain links with professionals from external agencies, for example the School’s Parent Support Adviser and the School Support Team, in order to ensure that students and their families gain access to all the services and provision necessary to meet the students’ needs and help them to reach their full potential.

Supporting Students

Students are supported in a number of different ways:

  • In–class support

Provided by a Behaviour Support Assistant

  • In Base 31

Students may be placed on short term inclusions from a specific subject area. During this time they will complete subject based work provided by their teachers, as well as working with Behaviour Support staff to address their behaviour.

At the end of the period of inclusion they will be returned to lessons with the short–term support of a Behaviour Support Assistant.

  • One–to–one mentoring

Weekly sessions with a member of Behaviour Support staff, working on programmes of behaviour management, anger management, self–esteem or other support as deemed necessary or appropriate to meet the student’s needs.

  • Group–work sessions

Weekly sessions with groups of students, identified as potentially benefiting from a specific type of intervention, for example self–esteem, social skills.

Internal Exclusion Centre

As part of the school’s Behaviour for Learning system, students who are subject to a C4 or C5 Consequence will complete this in the Internal Exclusion Centre (IEC), where they will complete work provided by their class teachers wherever possible.

Students are expected to work silently and follow the IEC Code of Conduct.

Failure to comply with expectations may result in the Consequence being repeated, or a further, more serious Consequence being issued.

Communication

Regular communication takes place between Behaviour Support Centre staff, Heads of Year, students and their parents/carers, to ensure we all work together in the best interests of the students.

Parents/carers are encouraged to contact the school to discuss their concerns.
